⚽ SUPPORTING PLAYERS WHO STRUGGLE WITH INSTRUCTIONS

For Coaches & Parents – Futsal Escocia

🧠 What’s Happening?

Some players may struggle to:

  • Remember multi-step instructions
  • Process spoken directions quickly
  • React to changing game situations
  • Translate verbal info into action

This might be due to:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Auditory or visual processing difficulties
  • ADHD or working memory challenges

✅ What Coaches Can Do:

1. Keep It Simple

  • Use short, clear instructions: “Dribble, then pass.”
  • Give 1 or 2 steps max at a time.

2. Show, Don’t Just Tell

  • Always demonstrate the drill or move.
  • Pair verbal instruction with a visual cue or action.

3. Check Understanding

  • Ask: “Can you show me what we’re doing?” instead of “Do you understand?”

4. Use Repetition

  • Repeat drills over several weeks with slight changes.
  • Familiarity builds confidence and fluency.

5. Create Predictability

  • Have clear routines for warm-up, training blocks, and cool-downs.

🤝 What Parents Can Do:

1. Talk Positively About Learning Styles

  • Reassure them it’s OK to learn differently.

2. Ask Coaches to Share Drills

  • Practicing at home in a quiet setting helps.

3. Encourage Effort, Not Perfection

  • Celebrate bravery, improvement, and persistence.

4. Share Relevant Info with Coaches

  • If a child has a diagnosis (or suspected challenge), sharing helps us adapt.

💡 Remember:

These players often excel with:

  • Creativity
  • Spatial awareness
  • Physical expression
  • Team spirit and resilience

"We believe in every player. Some need more time. All deserve the opportunity."
